Serving Worcester County since 1984
Clinton was first settled in 1654, as a part of Lancaster, MA, and incorporated as a separate town on March 14, 1850, It was named after New York’s DeWitt Clinton Hotel, a favorite haunt of Erastus Brigham Bigelow and his brother Horatio, the town founders.
Clinton turned into an industrialized mill town, with the Nashua River used as a source of power. Construction began on 1897 on the nearby Wachusett Dam, culminating in bringing the Wachusett Reservoir to full pool in 1908. This act flooded a large portion of Clinton, which had to be relocated. At Clinton in 1896, a significant feature of the Boston fresh water system was begun, with the creation of the Wachusett lake reservoir. Lying 385 ft. above the high-tide level in Boston harbor, the basin was excavated by ten years of labor. It had a capacity of 63,068,000,000 gallons of water, and was also the largest municipal reservoir in the world in 1911.
