German Cockroach
German cockroach (Blattella germanica) German cockroaches are yet another tropical species now found worldwide. They are by far the most common and important species from a public health standpoint. Distinguishing characteristics include long antenna that droop back and two dark bars on the top of the head. German cockroaches have been found to be effective carriers of the pathogens responsible for food poisoning, dysentery, and other illnesses. According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine,(May –1997) cockroach allergens (from their saliva, skin, and feces) are responsible for high rates of asthma among children in inner city housing. German cockroaches have extremely high reproductive rates with females producing 5 generations per year on average and up to 200 offspring! In buildings, they prefer warm areas with high humidity and therefore are found mostly in kitchens and bathrooms. Newer treatment methods rely mostly on baits. A properly performed application using baits will usually provide total elimination with only one treatment (depends on level of infestation).
