Q. My 6 year old son pointed out all of the ants and aphids on the azaleas by our deck. The aphids don’t seem to be bothered by the ants. He wanted to know why the ants don’t eat the aphids. I told him I’d ask a pro.

VIEW MOREQ. I get these really small ants in my home now and then. They usually go away for awhile in the summer but no matter what I do they eventually show up again. What are they and why won’t they leave me alone?

VIEW MOREQ. While installing a washing machine in our basement, we tore off a piece of wood trim and could see from the back side that something had been chewing in there and had mostly hollowed out the piece of wood. None of the other wood looks damaged but we don’t really know how to check. My husband is sure we have termites but aren’t there other insects that cause similar damage?
VIEW MOREQuestion. I think I have carpenter ants nesting in my house. Where could they be coming from?
Answer. Carpenter ants will nest in all sorts of places within a home. During my career, I’ve found them living in or around:
• Sills of basements or crawl spaces
• Insulation between floor joists in basements and crawl spaces
• Beneath insulation in attics
• Wall void behind the dishwasher
Q. We occasionally see some large black ants in an upstairs bedroom near where we had a roof leak two years ago. I’ve tried to follow them to their nest but they just disappear behind the baseboards. How can I find out where they’re coming from?
