Carpenter Ant Prevention
By Chris Williams on April 24, 2015.
Welcome. I’m Zack Ciras from Colonial Pest Control. Today, I’d like to spend a few minutes with you chatting about how to keep Carpenter Ants out of your house.
Carpenter Ants can be very destructive if nesting in your house. They chew into materials, especially wood, spit it out as frass, and populate colonies which can number well into the hundreds.
To prevent entry and occupation, a routine pest control service to maintain acceptable pest levels is essential. We offer a semi-annual maintenance service which prevents against and covers not only carpenter ants, but most of the common creepy crawlies you’re likely to encounter. It’s the most affordable, effective way to prevent pest problems. The products we use are low impact, professional pesticides.
Most common is something from the synthetic pyrethroid family. We use dust pesticides in the corners and around vulnerable areas which are likely to provide access. We use liquid insecticides to treat the foundation. Cracks and crevices on the inside can be treated with a liquid as well. We use a machine called a micro-injector to inject an ionized pyrethrin into cavities where ants may be nesting. This can get into areas unreachable by other means. The mist-like pyrethrin flushes out the ants, provides a quick knock down, and gives us a better idea of the numbers of insects, and how to apply residual pesticides.
As far as physical entry into the home, this can be prevented in part with good home maintenance. Keep the siding and trim well painted or stained, seal any gaps with caulk, and make sure any pipes or wires entering the house are well sealed as well. Keeping gaps and cracks well sealed will prevent ant or other insect entry. This will also help to prevent water from getting in and creating inviting conditions for wood destroying insects. A well maintained and water resistant house is a great leg up for pest prevention.
