Pillbug
Pillbugs (Armadillidium vulgare) are not insects in the true sense, but rather a unique crustacean that lives on land. They are similar looking and closely related to the sowbug (see image and description on site) but are easily distinguished by their habit of rolling up into ball when disturbed. Around the home, pillbugs prefer damp conditions outdoors and are usually found under stones, mulch, or debris in the yard. They exist by feeding upon decaying plant material and do not damage structures or infest food. Pillbug removal becomes necessary when they invade garages, basements, and crawlspaces. These migrations usually indicate a heavy population outdoors and require habitat alteration as well as chemical treatments to achieve effective pillbug extermination.
