Millipede
Millipedes are a group unto themselves within the greater arthropod kingdom (insects, spiders, crabs etc.). Over 7,500 species of “thousand leggers” have been described worldwide. Some tropical millipedes are large (up to 10 inches long!) and many produce dangerous secretions that can burn the skin if handled. Fortunately, the millipedes we see in and around the home (0.5 to 1.5 inch long, segmented, brown/black) are harmless. They live mostly outdoors in moist situations such as under bark mulch, and compost piles and feed upon this material as it slowly decays. Millipedes are highly susceptible to dehydration and under dry conditions may enter buildings in large numbers, which calls for millipede extermination immediately.
