WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT A “BUGGY” BASEMENT?
By Chris Williams on May 22, 2017.
Every since we had those heavy spring rains, we’ve seen a bunch of different bugs in our basement, including those roly-poly things. I don’t think there’s a leak anywhere down there but I can tell that it’s a lot damper. Do you think a dehumidifier would help keep the number of pests down? L. K., Barrington, NH
A dehumidifier would definitely help, as would fans or any kind of ventilation that would dry out the space, reducing the relative humidity. Poor foundation drainage or excessive condensation could be factors keeping your basement damp.
Ground-level insects and other arthropods that live around your home’s outside foundation often enter basements or crawlspaces when their outside conditions change – usually when their hiding places become too dry, or sometimes to escape when flooding occurs.
IT’S THE HIGHER HUMIDITY THAT ATTRACTS PESTS
Most insects like high moisture levels that keep their soft bodies hydrated. Some of them also feed on the molds that go along with too much moisture. Many pests that get into homes can only survive in basements, crawlspaces, laundry rooms and other indoor sites that have higher than normal humidity levels (see Here’s Why Pests Love Your Basement!). If these outside invaders don’t find their way to a damp location, they die pretty quickly in drier indoor air.
SEAL OPENINGS TO KEEP PESTS OUT
Having a basement that is too damp and is attractive to these moisture-loving pests is only part of the problem. Having gaps or openings around doors, windows, vents, etc. that allow the pests in is also a contributing factor. If you have a window well, or outside door in the basement, those would be the most likely entrance points. You may need caulking of cracks and openings, or screen repair, door thresholds, weatherproofing strips, etc., to keep pests out.
Besides treating around your home’s perimeter to keep basement pests out, at Colonial we also specialize in pest-proofing techniques and can find and seal up pest entrances.
